Highlights

The October/November issue of “Máquinas e Metais” digital is online. The article “Surface integrity in dry turning of AISI 1045 steel”, on page 16, evaluates whether the combination of the use of modern cermets in the dry turning of medium carbon steels is feasible, from the point of view of the integrity of the machined surface and tool life. See on page 24 the article “Comparison of the life of coated and uncoated drills when drilling CGI450 cast iron”, showing that the lower machinability of CGI implies challenges in the production line. The end of life of the cutting tool is precocious, mainly under severe conditions, a situation that instigates the study of new coatings to increase the life of these cutting tools. Furthermore, in “Notes & Information” section, on page 6, the news “Digital twins in machining”, about researchers at Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology (IWU) who explored the connection between digital twins and machining and developed a method that generates virtual replicas for processes such as milling, grinding, turning or drilling. This issue also brings the update “CNC horizontal lathes” and “HSC tool clamping” buyers’ guides.
